Accessibility

Using this site, however you use the web

This site is meant to work for everyone who needs it, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard alone, or a phone in bright sunlight.

What we aim at

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA. That is the standard, not a certificate — this site has not been independently audited, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

What that means here

Concretely, on these pages:

  • every control can be reached and operated with a keyboard, and the focused one is always visibly outlined
  • text is set at a size and contrast meant to be read on a phone outdoors, and the page reflows rather than scrolling sideways when you zoom in
  • if your device is set to reduce motion, the moving artwork and the fade-in effects do not run at all — the page is simply still
  • every field on the referral form has a real label, and an error says what to fix in words rather than only turning a box red
  • the illustrations are decorative and are hidden from screen readers, so nothing reads out a description of a drawing instead of the sentence beside it
  • there is no time limit on the form, and nothing moves or refreshes on its own

Where we know it falls short

The home page opens with a large illustrated scene that moves as you scroll. It is decorative, it is skipped by screen readers, and it stops moving entirely if your device asks for reduced motion — but on a slow connection it is a lot to download before the words arrive.

The site has been tested by hand rather than audited. If something does not work for you, we would genuinely like to know, because that is currently how we find out.

Telling us about a problem

Write to referrals@goodwillhousing.com. Tell us what page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what happened instead — including what you were using, if you know, such as a screen reader or voice control. We will reply, and we will tell you what we can fix and when.

If something on this site is stopping you from making a referral, say so and send the referral in the email instead. We are not going to make a placement wait on our own website.
